Downloadable content has become an almost essential feature this generation, with online shooters getting their fair share of map packs. The excellent Gears Of War 2 is no different, with Dark Corners becoming the fourth map pack within nine months of release. As an added surprise, it comes with a half-hour long campaign mission designed for stealth, which comes at odds with its usual guns-first, chainsaw-later gameplay.
Road to Ruin was scrapped from the original game for pacing issues, and it’s clear to see why. Set halfway through the game, Dom and Marcus must avoid detection through a heavily guarded Locust outpost, observing enemy patterns and moving on when the coast is clear. It’s not designed to be as hardcore as dedicated stealth titles - you can been seen, but your cover is only blown when you are close enough to be smelled - and makes regular use of its cover mechanic that goes hand-in-hand with the rest of the game.
Although it certainly works, it fails to take it to any significant heights. The campaign is designed as four areas each offering a barrier to overcome. The first section is basically sentries walking around boxes, while the second requires a distraction or two to get past a group of enemies, including the customary ‘dropping a box‘ trick. The third uses both ideas, but being situated in an integration zone, pitches the moral dilemma of saving the poor tortured souls or staying in cover. Unfortunately the idea is only touched upon in a brief spot of dialogue, and does nothing meaningful with it.
