Xbox 360 HD DVD Add-on Price Cuts Begin Today

Quote
Xbox Family was the first to report last week that the HD DVD add-on would have it’s price tag slashed to fifty dollars (US). Retailers have already started the slashing. ...

XF was lucky enough to be the first to find out about the planned price cut for the dead format last week, but we didn’t have an exact date for when it would start. We didn’t have to wait long as Kmart and Sears have already reduced the hardware to fifty dollars.

Most retailers have lowered the price of HD DVDs to under fifteen dollars in an attempt to clear out the old titles to make room for Blu ray.

Analysts this week said that they do not expect Microsoft to provide a Blu-ray-based solution for the Xbox 360. Instead, they predict a focus on digital content distribution via the Xbox Live online network.

As they are pretty useless with HD-DVD being dropped im not surprised the prices have been slashed.

You gotta think short term with HD-DVD or just get one to use as a DVD upconvert primarily.

Not much point with them having no more releases on them anymore. Will be quite worthless soon as you own most the already existing movies.

Can only tell difference on huge TV's really, its mainly the storage space thats the biggest advantage Blu Ray has.

Yeah, Blu Ray does have more space but HD DVD's had more than enough needed for now. Blu Ray won due to support from PS3 sales.

I thought that too, but with new games like Lost Odyssey needing 4 discs on standard DVD its starting to make Blu Ray look more appealing. Plus Hideo Kojima saying that MGS 4 used almost all the space on a Blu Ray disc.

Yeah, I've read that too. Metal Gear Solid must be one mega game all that space needed.

Microsoft has confirmed to Shacknews that it has ceased production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on, and units currently available at retail will be dropped in price to $49.

Microsoft's Taipei branch announced the drop earlier today, noting that it will continue to provide technical and warranty support for HD DVD player owners.

Electronics manufacturer Toshiba announced today that it will discontinue production of its HD DVD players and recorders, prompting many to sound the end of the format war in favor of Sony's Blu-ray disc.

Rumors began circulating last week that Toshiba, one of the largest backers of the HD DVD format, would discontinue support after retail giant Wal-Mart announced its decision to only sell Blu-ray discs in its stores.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war'," said Toshiba CEO Atsutoshi Nishida. "[We] concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop."
